JMI Planning played a key role in securing planning approval for the transformational redevelopment of the former Aida Bliss factory in Derby into a world-class stunt training academy, which is set to train the next generation of stunt performers, filmmakers and gymnasts.
Led by renowned Derby producer and stunt coordinator Damien Walters (credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and Kingsman: The Secret Service), the facility will become a new home for Derby City Gymnastics Club while offering world-class training in stunts, acting, and film production.
-
Phase 1 – Converting the rear warehouse into a cutting-edge gymnasium, performance studio and cafe
-
Phase 2 – repurpose the historic foundry into immersive filming sets and stunt work
-
Phase 3 – Constructing a dedicated gym and rehab facility for elite athletes
JMI prepared and submitted a comprehensive Planning Statement and Heritage Statement, assessing local and national policy and demonstrating the long-term viable use of the site. Particular attention was given to the significance of the former factory building and its contribution to Derby’s industrial heritage, with the Heritage Statement evaluating the impact of the proposals and identifying opportunities to preserve and enhance the building’s historic character.
